File-sharing, or peer-to-peer (P2P) applications have come under fire in the last decade from record and film companies, due to the proliferation of illegal, copyrighted material exchanged between users. However, using such applications to download non-commercial files is perfectly legal.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  Launch FrostWire by clicking the shortcut on your desktop or Start menu (Windows), or locating the shortcut in the list of applications on your computer (OS X).
  FrostWire launches and monitors your network for internet connectivity. Once this is verified, it attempts to establish a connection to the Gnutella network, where all other FrostWire users are connected to. Watch for the green icon which confirms you are connected to the FrostWire network.

• Choose Audio as the search type to ensure that only music files are returned in the list of results.

  Enter the Title of the first track to burn to the CD and press Enter. FrostWire scans the music collections of other users currently connected to the Gnutella network, and starts to build a list of results.
  If no matches are returned, try entering a different search term.

• Double-click a file in the search results to commence downloading it. Always choose those with the higher Quality rating and the highest number of users. A green tick means the file quality has been verified.
  If the MP3 file is of average size (around 5mb), there are multiple sources, and you have a broadband connection, then it will take just a few minutes to download to your computer.

  Repeat the previous two steps to download multiple tracks. These can be tracks from the same album, or you can create your own mixed compilation. Watch the progress bar of each track to ensure they are downloading successfully. If progress halts on a download, you might need to seek an alternate version of the track.

• Check your downloads folder when all the tracks are completed (in Windows this is My DocumentsFrostWireShared). The MP3 files should be present here.

  Insert a blank CD into your CD writer. In the dialog that appears, select the option that views the contents of the CD (Open Finder on OS X or Explore Disc on Windows). A blank window appears. Any files added into this window will be burned onto the disc in the drive.

• Drag the music files to be burned to the CD from the FrostWire Downloads folder (opened in Step 7) to the blank CD folder (opened in Step 8).

  Click Burn to create the CD. After a few minutes (depending on the speed of your CD drive and the quantity of data being burned) the CD is ready.

Tips & Advice

• Downloading copyrighted material from the internet using P2P applications is illegal. Ensure the music you search for and download is not commercially available.
• Many files on P2P networks contain viruses. Always use an anti-virus application that is fully up to date with the latest definitions.
